Presidents Letter

April 2008

April is a pivotal point in the Kaligrafos year. Elections for new officers will be held at the general meeting on April 12th, so I wish to thank the terrific team that worked with me (Vice President, Donna Sabolovic; Secretary, Louise Weber; and Treasurer, Sherry Barber) for their tireless support throughout the year. All came to their posts with previous experience in serving this guild and they nurtured me, the novice, with patience and wisdom. I am most grateful to each one individually and to them collectively as a team.

April is also the month when membership dues are payable, so be ready at the meeting to update your membership, guarantee a spot in next year’s directory and have a chance to enter your name in the raffle! At the May meeting we will draw a name from all renewed members to see who wins a $50 credit toward any Kaligrafos workshop of their choice in the next 12 months. Renew today! It’s good for Kaligrafos and good for you, too!

Our April program promises to provide you with more information about paper and varieties of papers than you ever imagined. Whether you letter, scrapbook, make cards, journal, etc. knowledge of paper is vital and always pertinent. Margaret Mall and Paul Siegel will be presenting and with their team are planning a fun and informative program, even with samples to take home and try!

We have reserved the Springhill Retreat Center in Richardson for the South West Calligraphy Conference January 23-24, 2009. Kaligrafos will be hosting the event. Representatives from 10 regional calligraphy guilds will gather here for an annual exchange of lettering ideas and guild insights. There are so many diverse areas where we will need Kaligrafos members’ help (communications, food and catering, signage, goodie bag items, hospitality, transportation, etc.) that I urge you to sign up to take a part, large or small, in this effort. I think it will offer a real opportunity to build camaraderie within our guild, too, so be a part of the team and join this common effort. Sign up sheets will be available at the meeting, or you can email me.

We also have reserved a great room at Fretz Park (Beltline and Hillcrest in Richardson) for 3 Saturday “playdays” during the summer (June14, July 12, and August 2) with the intent of organizing a SWCC committee and working on projects related to the preparation for the conference. If we run out of projects for SWCC we can have fun just playing around with our own calligraphic endeavors on a few of those long hot summer days.

Don’t miss the meeting April 12th. There will be important business on the agenda, but also some surprises and lots to learn and share.
